Migration dynamics and processes in LAC and between this region and the EU date back several centuries. What has changed over time are specificities in the shape and quantity of flows and stock, as well as the preferred destinations, which have varied depending on the historical moment and the economic, political, social and environmental contexts.
Migration dynamics and processes in LAC and between this region and the EU date back several centuries. What has changed over time are specificities in the shape and quantity of flows and stock, as well as the preferred destinations, which have varied depending on the historical moment and the economic, political, social and environmental contexts.
The ultimate aim of this publication is to be a useful source of information for various actors with an interest in this subject. To do so, it builds on the IOM publication “Migration routes and dynamics between Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC), and between LAC and the European Union” of 2012, providing new elements of analysis, while updating the figures based on the latest available data on the subject. In other words, the information presented in the 2012 study is updated, maintaining the methodology used for that publication. Therefore, the document includes some assessments of migration dynamics in LAC and regional integration processes based on a careful review of databases and literature produced over the last three years. In this sense, the publication does not seek to be an exhaustive assessment of migratory dynamics or the specific issues that arise from them. Nor does it propose a strategic work path or anything along those lines; it merely outlines trends and sketches possible lines of synergy between the governments of the LAC regions and the EU.
