{"id":26251,"date":"2025-10-21T10:25:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T13:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/?post_type=csem_em_foco&#038;p=26251"},"modified":"2025-10-22T14:57:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T17:57:27","slug":"csem-strengthens-ties-with-partners-in-germany-and-envisions-new-collaborations","status":"publish","type":"csem_em_foco","link":"https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/en\/csem_em_foco\/csem-strengthens-ties-with-partners-in-germany-and-envisions-new-collaborations\/","title":{"rendered":"CSEM strengthens ties with partners in Germany and envisions new collaborations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between August <\/span><b>21 and September 4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the director of the Scalabrinian Centre for Migration Studies (CSEM), <\/span><b>Sister Marlene Wildner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, traveled to Germany for a series of institutional meetings with long-standing partners, most notably the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, with mediation from Thomas Broch and Klaus J\u00fcrgen Kauss, whom the director described as \u201clong-time friends of CSEM and the Congregation and, above all, great promoters of our <\/span><b>ICoMiR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (International Conference on Migration and Refuge).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sister Marlene emphasized that \u201cvery meaningful meetings took place throughout the visit.\u201d One of the most important was with the new bishop of the diocese, Dr. Klaus Kr\u00e4mer, former president of Missio and Weltkirche.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He described CSEM as an institution with a wide network of collaborators and partners with whom it works and engages. \u2014 Sister Marlene Wildner.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the meeting, the bishop expressed concern about the rise of xenophobic discourse in the country and showed interest in CSEM\u2019s contribution to generating knowledge and initiatives that counter the mentality \u201cthat is growing in Germany\u2014a certain xenophobia, along with the idea that migrants and refugees are the cause of the country\u2019s problems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Sister Marlene, the bishop also presented a concrete proposal:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe proposed to resume academic symposiums in the diocese and suggested one to be held as early as next year, in 2026. Marlene Wildner e o bispo Dr. Klaus Kr\u00e4mer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The director noted that the bishop recognizes the value of CSEM\u2019s approach, which \u201calways represents a major contribution to the societies where [the migrant] lives, and also shows that, throughout their journey, they build resilient actions and overcome the difficulties they encounter.\u201d The bishop further suggested strengthening bridges with the German Episcopal Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the director, the meeting \u201cplaced CSEM in a very positive position to develop activities now also based in Europe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Dialogue with the Weltkirche Department of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart and new possibilities for collaboration<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the meeting with the bishop, Sister Marlene visited the <\/span><b>Weltkirche department<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where she was also received by its team. Once again, the topic was CSEM as an institution that contributes to developing a methodology on how a diocesan church can build communities that truly integrate and value the presence of migrants and refugees in local communities, fostering an exchange of experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Recognition and gratitude to Bishop Emeritus Gebhard F\u00fcrst<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the same trip, the director also visited the former bishop of the diocese, Dr. Gebhard F\u00fcrst, a central figure in the history of partnership between CSEM and Germany. \u201cHe was, in fact, the one who opened the doors to CSEM in its first projects, not only for CSEM but also for its global initiatives, always accompanying and supporting us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26239\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26239\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-8-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"339\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-8-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-8-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-8-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-8-1536x1152.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-8-16x12.png 16w, https:\/\/www.csem.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-8.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Gebhard F\u00fcrst, Ir. Marlene e Klauss J\u00fcrgen Kauss<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She recalled, for example, the bishop\u2019s support for peacebuilding events: \u201cThey always supported us, such as in the conference marking ten years of ceasefire in Angola, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building Peace in Angola<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, through Caritas Angola, was present, helped build, and sustain the program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the visit, Sister Marlene learned about the new social housing project of Caritas Germany, where the bishop resides. Each building includes a common space where families can meet once a week to share experiences and get to know one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She highlighted the project\u2019s inclusive character:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a defined percentage of low-cost housing that allows families with lower income or small children to access these residences at very low rent. Larger apartments for higher-income residents cost more, precisely to help subsidize the lower-cost housing.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sister Marlene observed that \u201cmost of the low-income families are migrants and refugees\u201d and that the project promotes \u201cthe coexistence of people from very different cultures and religions.\u201d According to her, \u201cthe bishop even shared stories of people he knows personally\u2014Muslims and others from different religions\u2014and the dialogues he manages to foster during these encounters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Academic partnership and new horizons<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the director met with <\/span><b>Dr. Klaus Kie\u00dfling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professor at the Sankt Georgen University of Philosophy and Theology in Frankfurt. \u201cHe is a highly renowned professor in Germany, author of many works, and has conducted extensive research in Catholic institutions that fund projects abroad, such as Kindermissionswerk and Adveniat, among others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting opened new possibilities for academic collaboration.
