Environmental and climate change affects the entire human population through the intensification and increase of extreme weather events. Among its consequences is the forced movement of those affected (temporary and/or permanent), jeopardizing their well-being and human security, which in turn has an impact, on the one hand, on territorial planning, the use and distribution of resources, the management of water bodies, productive soils and forest areas and, on the other hand, global, regional and national policies on population, migration and climate change, posing a sustainable challenge to local governments as those primarily responsible for managing measures to reduce human exposure and risk in the face of extreme weather events.
This research is part of the strategy and initiatives promoted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at global and regional level to better understand the relationship between migration, the environment and climate change, through the generation of conceptual and empirical knowledge. The study, in this first stage, covered five countries in the region: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador, in which a background analysis was carried out on the current state of the subject, a conceptual framework was developed and field research was carried out with the corresponding analysis of information and elaboration of conclusions and recommendations.
