According to a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at the end of 2016, around 65.6 million people, 1 in every 113 people worldwide, have been forced to leave their places of origin by different types of conflict. Of these, around 22.5 million are refugees and 2.8 million apply for refugee status.

- 55% of the world's refugees came from three countries: Syria (5.5 million), Afghanistan (2.5 million) and South Sudan (1.4 million).
- The countries with the most refugees are Turkey (2.9 million), Pakistan (1.4 million) and Lebanon (1 million).

According to the UNHCR, the American continent was home to around 692,700 refugees in 2016. The UNHCR indicated that the most relevant situations are:

1) Colombia: since 1985 there have been around 7.6 million internal displacements (conflict with the FARC). Between January and August 2017, another 8,700 new internal displacements.

2) Northern Central America: around 215,000 have requested refuge in the last 5 years due to violence and insecurity in their countries of origin.

3) Venezuela: between January and September 2017, around 48,500 Venezuelans applied for refuge in the world, almost double the number from the previous year. By July 2017, it was estimated that there were around 300,000 Venezuelans in Colombia, 40,000 in Trinidad and Tobago, and 30,000 in Brazil in various migratory situations or in an irregular situation.
