ROME - The celebrated photographer and recordist Rankin has teamed up with Unicef to make a 60-second video on the drama of "lost children" because of war, war and disaster, with particular attention to those separated from their families once they have been displaced. The video, which aims to start a discussion, invites people to look beyond the refugee and migrant labels and consider every child as a child, first and foremost, regardless of their origin. The video, accompanied by Bastille's intense song, "Four Walls", depicts refugees and migrants as they watch films of children in danger all over the world. Many of the children who made the video are the same refugees who were scattered by the ravages of war and are now trying to make a life for themselves. The purpose of the video is to show the stereotypes and prejudices of the refugees, giving the children an opportunity to say that they have the same hopes, fears and dreams as any other child.
"Amo girare con i bambini (sono così espressivi, non trattengono nulla) - ha dichiarato Rankin -. I'm a dad, I'm trying to capture the kids, but every now and then, while we're making the video, I'm struck by the experiences that some of them have seen. We wanted to participate in the making of the video with three Syrian children who were unable to do so. The day before the start of the raids, the father found out that his brother had been killed in a bombing in Aleppo. These children still have relatives in danger in Syria. Mi hanno detto che loro mancano le proprie famiglie e che si preoccupano ogni giorno per loro. We mustn't criticize and judge these children, because what they really need is love, security and warmth. What does it mean for a child? A child is a child and that's all that counts".
In the world, around 50 million children live outside their country of birth or are internally displaced, and at least 28 million of these children have abandoned their homes because of wars and conflicts. The number of refugees and migrants traveling alone has reached a record high, increasing by around 5 times compared to 2010. Almost 300,000 separated and unaccompanied children were registered in around 80 countries between 2015 and 2016, compared to 66,000 in 2010 - 2011. (DIRE)
