Balsas: alterities, mismatches and hope.

Scalabrinian Center for Migration Studies
Brasília: CSEM, 2000.

The Balsas research: Alterity, mismatch and hope, is an initiative that was born out of pastoral action in the Diocese of Balsas. Bishop Franco Masserdotti, the titular bishop of the diocese, in a meeting with the Scalabrinian Sisters who work in the region, expressed his concerns about the diocese taking a more consistent approach to migration issues. In this regard, he asked the sisters to deepen their studies and actions on the subject of migration.
This appeal is also due to the rapid process of transformation that has been taking place mainly in the south of Maranhão. Dom Franco wanted an instrument that could portray the reality of the diocese as a whole, in various aspects: economy, society, religiosity, culture and migration. As a starting point for the research, we chose to address the current migratory process and its implications for Balsas and some municipalities in the region.
